My name is Alex Poeter and I’ve been working in nonprofit/NGO organizational development for over thirty years. I’ve worked in many capacities at organizations, including founding and co-founding organizations, management, program development, board development, staff development, campaign development, and much more.

While many external factors can impact the well-being of an organizational leader, some of the main ones include the leader’s emotional state and mindset.

Because organizational environments within nonprofits/NGOs are often high paced, and impacted by political and economic volatility, leaders tend to show up from a place of being reactive. I’ve found that one of the biggest barriers that prevents leaders from realizing their highest potential is their conditioning. Conditioned patterns include limiting thought patterns, limiting belief systems, fear patterns, and limiting narratives about what’s truly possible.

However, our mindset and emotions drive our actions and decisions, which in turn impact our results and experiences. If we allow our fear-driven conditioning and survival patterns to control our actions and decisions, we continue to project those limiting qualities through the way we show up in the world. That’s why it’s important to uncover and remove our inner barriers that have been holding us back while learning to tap into our true power and potential. This allows us to create a reality that’s in alignment with our higher vision and goals.

The more we can bring our thought patterns, beliefs, emotions and narratives into alignment with our higher vision and goals, the more our inner alignment will be reflected in our "outer” experiences, including our professional relationships.

This is not to suggest that we should judge, avoid or suppress lower emotions. The key is to learn not to allow the emotions that come from our conditioned patterns to be in the driver’s seat, and to put our “higher self” or “wise self” in the driver's seat instead.

Another important step in this process is the embodiment of new behaviors and practices that foster greater balance and well-being. This will allow you to create visible improvements so you can gather tangible evidence that your efforts are paying off. This will help you to continue to build your confidence and strengthen your belief that you can achieve your ultimate vision for the type of leader you want to be and the day-to-day work experience you want to have.

The stronger your belief grows in your own abilities to create greater balance and well-being as a result of your continued progress, the more you’ll feel inspired to keep embodying behaviors and practices that align with your higher vision.  This creates a cycle of positive reinforcement so that daily practices to foster greater balance and well-being can become an integral part of your identity.
